AMPA Monaco

About us

The Monegasque Association for Research on Alzheimer’s Disease (AMPA) was founded in 1990 on the initiative of Michel Pastor and Dr Michel-Yves Mourou.

Since 2009, the association has been chaired by Catherine Pastor, supported by Vice-President Jean-Baptiste Pastor.

Professor Alain Pesce, former head of Monaco’s geriatric care programme, is now retired but remains a member of AMPA’s Board. His medical expertise, longstanding commitment and in-depth understanding of the challenges associated with Alzheimer’s disease continue to inform the association’s discussions and strategic direction.

AMPA operates primarily in the Principality of Monaco and the surrounding area. Its work focuses on supporting research, promoting the sharing of scientific knowledge, raising public awareness, and supporting people living with Alzheimer’s disease and their families.

Over the years, AMPA has established an international presence. It has been a member of Alzheimer Europe and Alzheimer’s Disease International, contributing to scientific and institutional exchanges at European and international levels.

In 2013, AMPA launched the Mediterranean Alzheimer Alliance, an initiative designed to bring together and support stakeholders involved in tackling Alzheimer’s disease across the Mediterranean region. Active until 2018, the alliance strengthened cooperation, supported the development of local initiatives and promoted the sharing of best practices across several countries in the region.

In recognition of its international work, AMPA has been recognised as an International Solidarity Organisation of Monaco.

Having proposed and subsequently coordinated the hospital-based gerontology pathway—including the memory clinic and various care and coordination facilities—from 2003 to 2020, I am pleased to continue my involvement through AMPA.

Our initiatives must focus on supporting research, while also addressing social and ethical issues, as well as the individual’s personal life goals. Furthermore, one of our flagship projects is psycho-education for caregivers; this anchors our work in providing direct, local support to those who are closest to the patients.

As Head of the Geriatrics Department and the Memory Center at the Princess Grace Hospital Centre, I have been dedicated for many years to the fields of aging, neurocognitive disorders, and geriatric psychiatry.

Through my involvement with AMPA, I aim to contribute to the development of initiatives focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and management of neurodegenerative conditions, as well as the implementation of new care pathways in Monaco.
I am also committed to advancing clinical research and fostering innovative approaches designed to improve the quality of life for patients and their caregivers.
