Monaco’s Support Programme for Family Carers
To mark World Alzheimer’s Day 2018, AMPA, in partnership with Monaco’s gerontology services, published an information and support booklet for family carers. Its aim is to help carers better understand Alzheimer’s disease and support loved ones living with neurodegenerative conditions in their daily lives.
Written in an accessible, easy-to-understand style, the booklet addresses the main questions and concerns of families. It explains the symptoms associated with Alzheimer’s disease, describes how the condition progresses and outlines its risk factors. Above all, it aims to reassure families and encourage people to seek specialist advice through a memory clinic in Monaco.
The booklet also offers practical advice to help carers manage everyday situations, including getting up, showering, mealtimes, activities and night-time care. It also helps families prepare for important decisions, such as moving into a care home or managing financial and legal matters.
Another key topic is the importance of maintaining relationships and communication, as well as understanding and responding to unusual or challenging behaviours. The booklet provides practical guidance that carers can adapt to their own circumstances.
Finally, it brings together information about specialist organisations in Monaco, available support services, useful contact details and the professionals who may be involved in providing care at home.
