Stay socially active
Maintaining an active social life is good for your brain. Social interaction stimulates the brain in several ways. For example, when talking to others, we need to remember what they say, pay attention and follow the conversation.
It is therefore important to maintain regular social contact:
-
Get out and about regularly
Whenever possible, leave the house to go shopping, take a walk, visit the post office or run other errands. -
Keep in touch
Stay in regular contact with family and friends. -
Spend time with others
Meet people regularly, whether at a bridge club, in a walking group or simply over a cup of tea.
-
Get involved in volunteering
Consider volunteering for a cause or activity that interests you. -
Enjoy cultural activities
Attend concerts, shows, exhibitions and other cultural events. -
Get to know your neighbours
Build connections with people in your neighbourhood and take time to chat with local shopkeepers.
Encourage intergenerational connections
Stay in regular contact with your children, grandchildren and younger people in your wider circle or neighbourhood.
Take an interest in their world and share activities with them, such as helping with homework, playing games or watching cartoons and films together.
