Monaco & the Alpes-Maritimes Take Flight Against Alzheimer’s Disease
In 2011, the AMPA, the France Alzheimer 06 association, the Alzheimer Trait d’Union association, the Centre Speranza Albert II in Monaco, and all the day-care centers across the Alpes-Maritimes department joined forces to organize a kite-flying event, aimed at raising public awareness about Alzheimer’s disease.
What made this project unique was that the kites were painted beforehand by people living with the disease and by children, as part of intergenerational art workshops. The event served as an innovative way to promote non-pharmacological therapies for Alzheimer’s, demonstrating that those affected by the condition retain their capacity for creativity and communication. From Menton to Cannes—and throughout the hinterland behind Nice—800 kites took to the skies as a symbol of hope and solidarity in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. It was a symbolic initiative designed to spark a different kind of conversation about the disease and to help shift the way it is perceived.
Extensive press coverage helped bring the topic of Alzheimer’s disease into the spotlight throughout the entire department. This project was selected and presented by AMPA on the occasion of the 27th International Conference of Alzheimer’s Disease Internationalin 2012.
